Avocado tree growth and fruit yield in response to nitrogen fertilization regimens

Nitrogen (N) is an essential nutrient for plants, and its application to crops in urban and rural areas may have a large impact on tree growth and yield, as well as on the environment.
An experiment was performed in a peri-urban location in southwestern Puerto Rico to determine the effects rates and distribution of N fertilizer during the production cycle. ‘Butler’ avocado trees growing in an open field were fertilized with different N regimens varying in the amount and time of N application.
Trees fertilized with lower rates of N and/or with less frequent applications tended to be smaller and to have lower fruit yields.
In comparison, fruit yield was greater when N applications were more frequent.
Fruit yield depended on fruit number.
