Abstract
Russeting is a physiological condition of the fruit skin and it causes the epidermis to rough like rust.
The russeting fruit appears brown in the skin, which is the cork cells formed in the hypodermal periderm.
Low temperatures, moisture and frost, low cuticular wax synthesis, tangential surface area, and physical stress are all known causes of russeting.
In this study, to investigate the russeting rate and aspects in Scilate apple fruit, we used the growth hormone GA4+7+6-BA and air circulation heating fans.
GA4+7+6-BA was sprayed three times every seven days after full bloom at different concentrations to promote cell division and generate a consistent arrangement of skin cells.
To examine the influence of low night temperature and frost on russeting, we installed air circulation heating fans and operated them for the night.
The percentage of russeting in the fruit was 25.0% in the GA4+7+6-BA 18 mg L‑1 treatment, while in the control (untreated) it was 38.3%. The fruit size and weight of the growth hormone-treated group were similar to the control, but the L/D ratio (fruit height) was high, and the sugar content tended to be slightly lower than the control.
The air circulation heating fan treatment also had a lower percentage of russeting (25.0%) than the control (38.3%). Even the air circulation heating fan treatment could not confirm the difference in the apple quality.
The area of russeting was 19.0% in control, 14.2% in growth hormone treatment, and 13.0% in air circulation heating fan treatment.
The most occurrence of russeting in control was found at a height of 2 m above ground level.
At a height of 2 m, the air circulation heating fan treatment significantly reduced the occurrence of russeting.
