Influence of agro-ecological factors on the composition of phytochemicals compounds in four nettle (Urtica dioica L.) genotypes

Abstract
Consumers more and more are taking care of a healthy and balanced diet.
Leafy vegetables belong to the food highly appreciated as a part of the healthy diet, having high nutritional value.
There are more than 1000 plants of the nettle family in the world, but only two species grow in Latvia, and the stinging nettle (Urtica dioica L.) is the only one used in food.
Its leaves are a good source of some important minerals and vitamins.
The research was aimed to evaluate the biochemical composition of four different stinging nettle genotypes of local origin.
The investigations were carried out at the Institute of Horticulture, Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies in 2015-2017. Trials were installed in two different fertilisation variants (without fertiliser and with peat-manure compost applied as base fertiliser). Nettle shoots were cut two and four times during the vegetation period when shoots were at 10-15 and 7-10 cm length.
Content of pigments, phenols, vitamin C was detected.
The amount of these compounds in the nettle leaves increased over the cultivation years of plantation.
Fertiliser mostly positively influenced phytochemicals.
