Integrated effects of packaging and gamma irradiation on Nam Doc Mai Si Thong mango shelf-life (Mangifera indica L.)

Abstract
Mangos are ranked fifth among fresh produce export crops from Thailand.
Thai mango cultivar Nam Doc Mai Si Thong is the most popular exported fruit into Japan, Korea, China, Europe, Australia, and the USA. It has a sweet flavor when ripe, a smooth pulp, and a golden skinny peel which make it widely desirable for the international trade markets.
Prior to export, the fresh mango fruits used in this study were subjected to phytosanitary treatment and biosecurity measures.
A hot water dip treatment, hot vapor treatment, and ionizing irradiation treatment combined with good postharvest treatments provided the best processing to eradicate insects and pests.
Irradiated mango fruits shelf life of 7 days at ambient temperatures of 32-35°C to an expanded shelf life (12 days) during storage temperatures of 13-15°C when they arrived at their countrys destinations.
This result was mostly causing poor mango fruits qualities for long-distance export even after irradiation and export.
Here we show that using modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) could successfully delay the ripening process in physico-chemical qualities and reduced disease incidence which make it widely accepted by consumers, and then stored in reefer container.
Our results demonstrate that white ethylene-absorbing bag 1 and 2 (WEB1) and (WEB2) enhanced the shelf life up to 24 and 15 days for non-packed.
Besides, plastic bags with high oxygen transmission rate resulted in induce ripening process of mango fruits and decay ratio during storage.
Furthermore, the Nam Doc Mai Si Thong mango used WEB1 and WEB2 bags could be transported over long distances by sea freight.
