Abstract
Curitiba, the capital of Parana state, is one of the greenest cities of Brazil.
This study focused on the 29th March Square, an important public space, comprising almost 30% of the district green area.
Since its construction in 1966, this space has undergone several interventions, within the urban, architectural and landscape spheres.
The aims of this research were to understand the main urban interventions that occurred since the 29th March Square was built, to check any changes from the original architectural and projects, to adjust it to the local human needs, and to document and preserve the artistic and cultural memory, regarding with its landscape and architectural aspects.
The Square was projected in 1965 by three renowned Brazilian Urban Architects, Domingos Bongestabs, Jaime Lerner and Onaldo Pinto de Oliveira, with the contribution an important Brazilian draftsman, printmaker, ceramist, and muralist, Poty Lazzarotto.
We carried out an inventory of the current plants in the Square, an interview with one of the three architects who projected it, a study of the neighborhood profile, and traffic conditions during the last years, and a survey of gymnastic and furniture equipment installed since this Square was built.
We concluded that the monumental March 29th Square is strongly connected with the Modernism Movement occurred worldwide at 1960th years.
Regarding the interventions that occurred since it was built, the original project was changed to adjust it to the local human needs and to the local traffic, not mischaracterizing the original design concept of the proposed project.
In that way, we invite you to think about what is more important as a future landscape conduct directive: to preserve green and historical patrimony areas or to adjust it to the humans and traffic needs?
