Selection of ornamental species with different respiratory metabolism for use on green roofs

Abstract
It is desirable that green roof present multi-functionality through harmonized environmental services and ornamental potential.
This research aimed to characterize and select ornamental species with different respiratory metabolisms grown in different substrate depths for use on green roofs.
The experiment was conducted in a roof of the Engineering Campus of the University of Bologna (UNIBO), Italy.
The species cultivated in beds with 8, 10 and 12 cm in depth, were: metabolism C3 – Begonia cucullata and Salvia nemorosa; metabolism CAM – Crassula capitella ‘Campfire’; Echeveria pulvinata ‘Frosty’; Sedum album L., Sedum palmeri S. Watson; Delosperma cooperi (Hook.
F.) L. Bolus; D. cooperi ‘Orange Wonder’; metabolism C4 and CAM – Portulaca grandiflora Hook.
The survival rate, soil coverage rate, flower production, general appearance, and height of the plant were evaluated.
The D. cooperi and D. cooper ‘Orange Wonder’ (CAM) stood out with the highest flower production, ranging from moderate to intense production, with a pleasant appearance, mainly in substrate with 12 cm depth.
The P. grandiflora (C4 and CAM), showed an elevated survival rate (92%), presenting moderate flower production and pleasant appearance.
The B. cucullata and S. nemorosa (C3) (survival rate of 83%) demonstrated pleasant to very pleasant appearance and moderate flower production.
The C. capitella ‘Campfire’, E. pulvinata ‘Frosty’, S. album, S. palmeri (CAM), although with 83% of survival rate, featured not pleasant appearance, and no flowers.
The D. cooperi, D. cooperi ‘Orange Wonder’ (CAM), P. grandiflora (C4 and CAM), are indicated for uses in multi-functional green roof, preferably in substrates with 8 and 12 cm depth.
These species resisted a wide range of temperatures (9-43°C) and preserved their ornamental characteristics.
The species B. cucullata and S. nemorosa (C3) also indicated, presented good general appearance and covering capacity, regardless of substrate depth.
