The role of mineral nutrition in future fruit production

The workshop on the role of mineral nutrition in fruit crops in human nutrition highlighted the importance of fruit and vegetables in the human diet.
While the contribution of mineral nutrients from vegetables is often discussed, the role of fruit crops is less frequently mentioned.
The workshop participants, including representatives from various countries, emphasized the need to analyze recent data on a global scale to quantify changes in mineral nutrient composition and concentration of different fruit crops.
The discussion also highlighted the importance of management practices to address the matter of human nutrient deficiencies.
While there is no economic incentive to produce crops with a specific/higher nutrient content, a balanced food basket with a variety of food types was proposed as the primary solution for a sustainable diet.
The workshop concluded that it will require a multidisciplinary team to address the bigger awareness thereof in future.
