Abstract
Our research problem is to make the water from a “barreiro trincheira”, of poor quality for human consumption, safe and quality water through simple techniques.
These techniques must be easily replicated by the local community. Moringa oleifera (MO) is a promising alternative to coagulating agents, indicated to the water treatment systems and the clarification process, in addition to being biodegradable.
That justifies the study of MO as a social technology for riverside populations to treat water simply and effectively.
Our hypothesis is: our water treatment system using MO seed coagulation and multi-step filtration with MO biomass and vegetable loofah can effectivelly treat “barreiro trincheira” water for human use and consumption.
We aimed to build and evaluate a social technology for water treatment using MO and vegetable loofah in a multi-stage filtration system (FIME) at riverside populations’ houses.
We carried out this research in partnership between UFS and IFS, where we analyzed raw water and water after treatments.
We analyzed pH, apparent color, turbidity, total hardness, calcium hardness, magnesium hardness, chlorides, sodium, lithium, and potassium, besides microbiological analyses of total coliforms and Escherichia coli. As a result, we can see a reduction of up to 97.66% in turbidity, 99.52% in apparent color, 100% in total coliforms and Escherichia coli comparing raw water and the water after the proposed treatment.
