Abstract
The use of plant-based seed oils, including moringa seed oil, has gained enormous attention in agriculture.
This seed oil presents an exciting research object, due to its properties and various potential applications in agriculture.
Moringa seed oil contains certain compounds that exhibit insecticidal and fungicidal effects, making it a viable natural alternative to synthetic pesticides.
This oil can also be used to promote plant growth as it contains plant growth-promoting compounds, which can stimulate plant growth, root development, and nutrient uptake.
Additionally, moringa seed oil can potentially enhance the germination rate and seedling vigour by protecting the seeds from microbial infections and breaking dormancy.
Furthermore, moringa seed oil, also considered a fixed oil with antimicrobial and antifungal properties, can enhance the postharvest life and quality of horticultural crops, thereby reducing postharvest losses.
This review, therefore, gives a summary of the recent developments on the extraction and characterization of moringa seed oil, its application in agriculture to promote plant growth and development and its potential to preserve quality and shelf life of fruit and vegetables postharvest.
The review further discusses the environmental concerns of moringa seed oil extraction methods.
