Abstract
Recent occurrences of bee deaths during pollination events have sparked concerns regarding the impact of chemical usage in orchards on the health of beehives.
At the same time, the European Unions digital product passport has recently emphasised the necessity for complete supply chain transparency to ensure sustainable practices.
Similar future demands for traceability in food production are expected to increase further.
This research presents a novel pollination traceability system crucial to meeting those demands.
The proposed pollination traceability system integrates existing industrial apiary and orchard management systems to enhance transparency and data sharing among stakeholders regarding orchard chemical usage and beehive monitoring.
Unlike existing approaches, an integration-based traceability solution is expected to result in a pull-based adoption from farmers.
Global Standards 1 (GS1) are employed to develop common information models for data storage and exchange.
At the same time, a role-based access permission framework is designed to ensure controlled access and sharing of sensitive data.
The proposed system is designed for deployment using microservices-based cloud infrastructure to ensure scalability, cost-effectiveness, and industry readiness.
Furthermore, it can aid national pest and disease traceability across apiary and orchard production systems and assist in transforming supply chain monitoring and reporting.
