Abstract
Due to the labor shortage in rural areas, agricultural mechanization is being presented as one of the solutions.
Currently, the major peach and nectarine training system in the Republic of Korea is open-center, which is unsuitable for mechanization due to its three-dimensional structure.
Here, the multi-leader system, one of the planar training systems, was implemented in ‘Yellow Dream’ nectarine and its growth, productivity, fruit quality, and management time were compared with open-center.
At the third year after planting, tree height of multi-leader trees was lower than open-center.
Total fruit yield was three times higher in multi-leader trees than open-center trees, while the fruit quality was not significantly different.
Multi-leader trees required less time for harvest and pruning while they required more time for thinning due to their high density of flower buds.
As the management of training system differs with tree age, long-term monitoring is needed to fully understand the multi-leader system.
