Pomological characteristics of indigenous accessions of oranges from the region of southern Croatia

Abstract
Pomological characteristics of traditionally grown, indigenous orange (Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck) from southern Croatia (Dubrovnik area) was conducted.
Ten accessions of oranges were collected (Trstenka, Ludača, Katarinka, Puh, Jaffa, Ljuta naranča, Bezimena, Katarinka 2, Crvena, Ljetna), and described according to IPGRI descriptors for citrus fruit.
Among analysed accessions statistically significant difference was recorded.
Fruit weight varied from 85.41 to 193.09 g, and accession Katarinka had the highest fruit weight.
Oval fruit predominated, with peel colour from light to dark orange with red pigments.
Accession Ludača had the thickest peel, and peel weight was 54.10 g.
The smallest peel weight was recorded in accession Jaffa. Uniformity of orange colour of fruit flesh was detected in all accessions, except Crvena which has red pigment of the fruit flesh.
Fruit flesh texture of investigated accessions was not significantly different.
Significant differences between accessions in juice yield were recorded and varied between 52.48 to 35.19%. The total soluble solid (TSS) of Bezimena was 14.4 °Brix, followed by Jaffa (12.8 °Brix) and Crvena and Katarinka (11.8 °Brix). The highest total acidity (TA) was recorded for Ljuta naranča (24.5%), Jaffa (12.1%) and Bezimena (9.98%), while the highest TSS/TA ratio was recorded for Ljetna and Trstenka. The results of this study contribute to the scientific determination of differences between selected indigenous orange accessions in the Dubrovnik area.
Greater recognition of indigenous Dubrovnik orange cultivars by customers and producers, in the end can result in a larger number of plantations in a time when the authenticity of the fruits is increasingly appreciated.
