Recent approaches in ploidy analysis in citrus plants

Abstract

For many studies like biosystematics and breeding, variations in chromosome contents of living organisms provide valuable information to scientists.
Many physiological characteristics in plants are influenced by genome size and chromosome level differences.
Morphological and cytological criteria were commonly used to detect polyploidy.
However, it might be deceptive to characterize polyploidy on structural basis only.
The number, structure and pairing of chromosomes is also affected by other factors.
Studies during the last several decades have elucidated that ploidy level analysis in citrus by cytogenetic methods is a slow and inadequate process.
However, detecting polyploidy with flow cytometry is considered to be easier and faster.
This study will briefly review the ploidy analysis in citrus plants from a methodological viewpoint.
