Abstract
As a result of the 50 years work on genetics and breeding of sour and sweet cherries in the Central Genetics Laboratory (Michurinsk, USSR) a number of methodical questions have been worked out; the hypothesis of the sour cherry origin from spontaneous hybridization of two botanical species has been experimentally confirmed.

7 districted sour and sweet cherry varieties have been obtained.

The method of creating sour cherry varieties immune to Coccomyces blight by means of incorporating resistant genes into a sour cherry genome from Padus Maackii, has been suggested. "Almaz", a donor of resistance, has been obtained.
On the basis of the new donor a long-term "CHERRY" program (1981–2000) has been worked out; its aim is the creation of highly productive intensive sour cherry gardens.
