Abstract
Our intervention has not the aim to present scientifical results obtained through the research work undertaken by FAO projects in connection with one or more fruit and vegetable crops because these results are usually communicated, time to time, at world wide level or can be easily obtained through our FAO documentation system; but on the contrary to inform all the international participants to this congress about the programmes, policies and ongoing activities of the Horticultural Crops Group of FAO’s Plant Production and Protection Division.

We believe that this subject is of great interest to all the participants particularly if we consider that the field project activities of horticulture in FAO have increased about four times in number of projects in the last five years which would indicate the interest that horticultural crops are receiving in several developing countries facing the problem of shortage of food.
