Postharvest UV-C lights treatment to delay senescence of green leafy vegetable, gai lan

Abstract
Postharvest treatment with UV-C light has been shown to significantly extend the shelf-life of many horticulture crops.
In this study, freshly harvested gai lan (Brassica oleracea) were exposed to UV-C lights at four different intensities (0, 4.1, 10.2 and 16.3 kJ m‑2) at 20°C. After treatment, gai lan was stored for nine days in air at 10°C. Weight loss, ethylene production, respiration rate, total soluble solids (TSS), titratable acidity (TA), vitamin C, total chlorophyll content, turgidity, flower development and overall acceptability were assessed at 3-day intervals.
The results showed that gai lan exposed to postharvest UV-C lights had significantly lower levels of ethylene production and respiration rate, and this UV-C light was dose dependent, with higher UV-C intensity showed lower in ethylene production and respiration rate during storage.
UV-C lights also affected total chlorophyll content, with the highest UV-C intensity showing the highest impact on total chlorophyll content.
UV-C lights had no significant impact on weight loss, TSS, TA, vitamin C, flower development, leaf turgidity and overall acceptability.
These results suggest that UV-C lights have the potential to delay senescence and maintained chlorophyll content of gai lan at 10°C storage.
