Abstract
Research points to numerous benefits provided by urban trees including qualitative and quantitative public health, economic and environmental advantages for a city and its residents.
As with other key aspects of city management that help develop municipal success, urban forestry requires foresight, commitment and planning that lead to effective policies and strategies.
Good street tree management based on effective policies can maximise their benefits.
A case study of Forte dei Marmi, a little town in northern Tuscany on the coast of the Ligurian Sea (Italy) and popular destination for luxury tourism in summer, illustrates these benefits.
Urban policies for the care and protection of trees in this town have evolved, promoting municipal commitment to conservation and the adoption of best practice management principles.
Based on the tree census, the use of the i-Tree tool and the wet bulb globe temperature index appropriately detected on the municipal territory, the urban green policies can lead to an improvement in quality of life and promoting a local culture of tree protection.
The adoption of guidelines, based on minimum environmental criteria, and thoughtful policies can lead to proactive and successful management of the urban forest and the draughting of greenery plan.
These policies also include measures to collect essential data for strategic tree planting, care and removal.
