Abstract
Work on integrated pest management in topfruit in the Netherlands inspired the collecting of old apple and pear cultivars started eight years ago.
Main points of interest are the redundancy of chemical control on varieties with resistance for diseases, and the effects of "secondary" properties of the hostplant on the biological control of pests and diseases.
So far attention has been paid mainly to the identity and phenology of approximately 300 apple varieties.
Scab and mildew infections on the various trees are also monitored regularly.
The collection of pears has been decimated by the severe winter 1978/79 and will be discontinued.
Some general experience gained during these first years is discussed.
The Dutch collection of apple varieties cannot be considered as permanent.
