Abstract
Both the census and the conservation of traditional fruit cultivars are being greatly developed in France today.
As this is not simply an isolated initiative but rather a trend spreading over the whole country, it seems necessary to consider the different groups or individuals working in this area as well as to take stock of the various programs currently underway.
Therefore, this paper will not insist upon the technical and arboricultural aspects of conservation, but rather try to give a glimpse of what is being achieved and how ethnobotany can be useful in such undertakings.
Our attention was thus attracted to the tremendous but relatively unknown, diversity which exists at both the national and regional levels and is related to the many different ecological situations (soil, climate, altitude, agrarian systems) found throughout the country.
