Abstract
The Czech Republic has been a member of EU since 2004, so the growers are part of the European common market.
The majority of the fresh fruit is sold through supermarkets, which hold about 85% of the market and exert strong pressure on prices and quality.
For many reasons, the overall situation for Czech growers is not good and leads to a decrease in the total area of orchards.
On the other hand, production intensity and yields are slowly increasing.
Intensification and investments are made mainly by a very few larger companies with orchards of more than 100 ha.
They supply supermarket chains.
The rest of the companies are mainly reducing their orchard area to optimize production for the local market only.
There are still many companies with outdated growing technology and low yields, so there is significant potential to improve the growing technology, yields and overall economics.
On the other hand, unstable market and climatic conditions result in low ability, desire and willingness to invest in this business.
