Abstract
Chemical thinning is quite common in apples.
There are different active ingredients available for bloom and post bloom thinning, but few of them are registered for use in organic production.
Only in Switzerland Armicarb (potassium hydrogen carbonate 85% SP) is registered for thinning at bloom in apples, apricots and plums.
Armicarb is effective for thinning not only at bloom, but also later.
The suggested application time is between 12 to 15 mm fruit size, although the product is effective up to 20 mm.
Armicarb late thinning uses the same models developed for metamitron although the mode of action for late Armicarb application needs to be further studied.
In the trials carried out up to now some flower burns have been observed with the bloom application along with some skin russeting although this aspect is cultivar dependent.
