THE INFLUENCE OF DENSITY OF PLANTING AND VARIETIES ON BEARING OF PEARS

In most modern orchards of fruit varieties there is a tendency of increasing the number of fruit trees per hectare as well as the productivity of work and improvement of fruit quality.

In Europe the pear is grown in semi-intensive and intensive plantings but not so often in high intensive plantings.
The most frequent training shaper are palmettes with slant branches and spindle bush but less frequent are palmette with horizontal branches and cordons.

In Yugoslavia the pear is most frequently grown in intensive plantings on quince A with 1.600 to 1.900 trees/ha, at distances of 3.5 x 1.8 m to 3.5 x 1.5 m.

In order to examine the possibilities of growing pear on quince A in high density plantings using slender spindle we have set up the experiment with varieties Williams, Abbe Fetel and Passe Crassane using a density of 1.428 to 5.714 trees per hectare.
