Abstract
The content of total dietary fiber and ascorbic acid in heads of white cabbage supplied with nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in different levels and combinations was examined in order to improve the nutritive value.
Plants were grown in frames containing poor sandy soil.
Previous to analyzing heads were stored for 1 month.
The results are from 1 year of experiment.
Plants were grown in frames containing poor sandy soil.
Previous to analyzing heads were stored for 1 month.
The results are from 1 year of experiment.
Nitrogen fertilization had a marked effect on the yield, total dietary fiber and ascorbic acid.
The content of dietary fiber and ascorbic acid decreased with increased nitrogen supply.
Without N application the content was 3.13 g and 71.0 mg compared with 2.44 g and 46.8 mg per 100 g fresh weight at 600 kg N per ha for dietary fiber and ascorbic acid respectively.
Phosphorus application showed a slight tendency to increase the dietary fiber content but did not influence the ascorbic acid content.
Potassium increased the content of ascorbic acid but had no effect on the dietary fiber content.
The weight of cabbage heads was negatively correlated with the content of ascorbic acid and the content of dietary fiber.
