Abstract
Unpruned sweet cherry cultivar ‘Hedelfinger’ (P.avium) grafted onto size controlling rootstocks exhibited early senescence in shoots and spurs when branches were older than 4 years.
The trees of two preliminary rootstock trials were severly pruned after the sixth year in the orchard.
In the year after pruning there was an unexpected growth of shoots from terminal buds of spurs (bouquets). The severe pruning affected components of growth and yield, leaf colour, leaf roll symptoms, and gummy exudate spots at the graft-union.
