Abstract
Two experiments investigated sources of variability in results of citrus leaf tissue analysis, arising from (i) sample handling, (ii) sample preparation, (iii) cultivar differences, and (iv) crop load effects.
Varying leaf sample handling and preparation techniques resulted in significantly different levels of most nutrient elements and possible improvements to current commercial methods are suggested.
The effect of sample handling on respiration rates of sampled leaves is suggested as a cause for this effect particularly for N, P, K and Ca which showed higher analysis values where sample respiration rate was high.
Leaf sample washing also affected results.
Washing lowered concentrations of Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu and Mg, probably due to removal of surface contaminants.
