GENETICS AND PHYSIOLOGY OF PARTHENOCARPY IN TOMATO
Severlanin was significantly higher in early yield and percentage fruit set under cold weather conditions than other genotypes evaluated; viz, Floradade, Peto 86, UCX 78 W 29 and VF 145-B-7879.
Genetic studies were conducted on parents, F1, F2 and backcross (BC) plants of the crosses Severlanin x UC 82 and Severianin x VF 145-B-7879 and their reciprocals.
Characters studied were percentage fruit set and percentage parthenocarpic fruits produced under cold weather conditions.
Both characters were found to be controlled by a single recessive gene which is basically the gene responsible for parthenocarpy.
Gibberellins (GAs) content of flower ovaries was nearly 3 times in cv.
Severianin as in cvs UC 82 or VF 145-B-7879. No notable differences were observed between F1 plants and their seeded parents or between reciprocal hybrids.
These results were in accordance with the genetic studies and pointed to the importance of a high GAs content in flower ovaries for parthenocarpic fruit set in tomatoes.
