Abstract
Recent research in gene regulation in higher plants has involved one of several physiological processes in the few plant species amenable to such work. One system that has attracted considerable interest is fruit ripening in tomato.
The purposes of this talk is to overview why the tomato provides a good model for plant genetics, why the tomato allows the use of both classic and molecular tools in such research, why tomato ripening is being studied by biologists interested in the control of developemental gene expression, and current areas of work in tomato ripening.
