Abstract
The authors report in this paper the studies on the responses of tree stem diameter changes to the soil water availability, analyse the water status of plants according to the stem shrinkage and propose a technique for scheduling irrigation: micromorphometric method.

Field and greenhouse studies on the irrigation scheduling for peach trees (Prunus persica (L.) Batsch) have shown the advantages of micromorphometric method.
The trees irrigated according to the micromorphometric method consumed less water as compared with the trees irrigated by the classical method, the net photosynthesis increased, premature fruit drop was partly prevented, fruit quality and fruit storage capacity were improved and the roots developed better.
