SOME FACTORS IN THE DESIGN OF METAL STRUCTURES

The design of a glasshouse structure for a commercial grower results from a compromise between three main (and somewhat conflicting) requirements:

1. maximum light for the plants as far as is practicable and economic

2. structural integrity under a variety of loading conditions

3. cost – initial outlay, assembly and maintenance.

This paper discusses these aspects, with particular reference to b. and c., as applied to single-span glasshouses of symmetrical roof-pitch.

Comparison of various national standards shows important differences in general loading requirements, and the need for agreement on some common standards is indicated.

Glasshouse structural materials are discussed and various types of designs involving their use are commented on.
Attempts to “optimise” structures are described.

Corrosion problems and methods of prevention are described.
