Abstract
A replicated (N=3) field trial was conducted on a= S-deficient soil to study the effect of four forms of sulphur (S, SO4, SO4 +S 1:1 ratio and S=) applied through S powder, gypsum and pyrites at three rates (30,60 and 90 kg S/ha) on yield and quality of opium poppy.
Maximum increase of 18.6 and 28.2% in seed and oil yields respectively were recorded with 60 kg S/ha applied as SO4-S compared with control.
Sulphur application increased the oil (1.5%) and crude protein (3.1%) contents of the seed as well as linoleic acid (2.8%) and total unsaturated fatty acids ((2.1%) in the oil.
Concentration and yield of morphine, codeine and thebaine were also positively influenced by high rates of S, while the effect of the forms was not distinct.
