Abstract
Poppy, oil flax, caraway and mustard are considered to be as some of the medicinal and spice plants having a comparatively high home-demand in Austria.
To determine the proper varieties and their nitrogen requirement respectively, field tests with varieties registered and increasing nitrogen rates were carried out for several years.
Beside agronomical traits, such as plant height, thousand – seed mass yield, chemical traits, such as fat-content, fatty acid composition, opium yield and morphine content (poppy), essential oil content (caraway), and swelling factor (oilflax) were investigated.
Varieties showed high variabilities in most of the traits, which make them interesting for breeding work in the future.
Considerating yield and quality aspects, 40–80 kg N/ha for poppy, 70–80 kg for oil flax and 100 kg for mustard are recommendable.
