Abstract
In 85% of apple replant orchards replant diseases occur which require control measures.
After finding out that specific replant disease is caused by soil microorganisms which can be eliminated by soil disinfection, a chemical control measure was developed.
Disinfection is carried out only when pot test suggests that it is necessary.
The fumigants used are dazomet and metham-sodium.
Dazomet compounds are incorporated into the soil by drilling and subsequent ploughing.
The application of the liquid metham-sodium preparations to large areas is carried out by using a plough mounted dosing feeder.
This procedure can be carried out by the orchardists themselves.
If properly applied, no unfavourable influences will be observed with regard to human health.
Since 1986 this measure has been applied to more than 1000 ha.
Growth and yield of apple trees were similar to those from areas where fruit trees were planted on virgin soil.
