OCCURRENCE OF MYCORRHIZA IN CITRUS ORCHARDS IN THE METAPONTO AREA OF BASILICATA (ITALY).

Abstract
The presence of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi was investigated in soil and root samples from 26 citrus orchards in Basilicata.
All root samples showed more than 85% root fungal infection.
Three main spore types, belonging to the genus Glomus Tul. & Tul., were isolated from soil close to citrus roots: these spore types were present in nearly all samples, irrespective of soil chemical and physical characters, of citrus rootstock genotype, and of weed cover.
Spores were more abundant in March than in November.
The adaptability of these strains to different environmental and cultural conditions makes them suitable as inoculum in fumigated soils to prevent stunted growth of young citrus trees.
