Abstract
Calanthe striata R. Br., native to the southern islands in Korea, has beautiful yellow flowers with sweet fragrance, and it is evaluated to have considerable ornamental value.
The effect of low temperature treatments on growth and flowering of C. striata was examined to develop a forcing method.
Low temperature treatments were conducted at 5°C and the natural low temperature of 730 m altitude area of Mt.
Halla in Jeju island for 0, 30, 60, 90, 120, or 150 days.

In general, days to bloom and to leaf expansion after termination of cold treatment decreased with increasing days of low temperature treatment.
However, the number of days to bloom from the beginning of cold treatment was shortest (130 days) in the treatment of 60 days at 5°C. It was 54 days shorter than the untreated control.
This treatment produced long flower stalk with excellent flower quality and showed rapid, good leaf growth.

In case of natural low temperature treatment for 90 days from October 5 in the mountain area, the plants were in flower 2 months earlier than the untreated control and had long flower stalk with excellent flower quality and showed rapid leaf growth and good leaf expansion.
