Abstract
The present pattern of the production and trade of essential oils reflects a far reaching evolution since the beginning of the century.

- a competitive supply side, with more and more producers,
- a complex situtation in relation to demand, with a great increase in industrial turnover and expansion in the ranges of uses of essential oils ; however, at the same time synthetic alternatives pose a serious threat especially in perfumery.
