PEACH AND NECTARINE CULTIVARS INTRODUCED IN THE WORLD FROM 1980 TO 1992

Abstract
According to the available international literature, during the years 1980–1992 it results that the following peach and nectarine cultivars have been introduced in the world: 475 peaches for fresh market, 287 nectarines and 80 canning clingstone peaches.
The U.S.A. is the country which has mostly contributed to the cultivar enrichment with 46.9%, followed by Italy with 14.9%. According to the genetic origin, 52% of the cultivars has been obtained through cross-pollination, 23% by open pollination, 8% by bud mutation.
An interesting difference among peaches and nectarines is evident looking at the nature of the breeder, on the whole, 45% has been released by public institutions, 53% by private breeders, 2% is not known.
The ripening calendar shows the amount of work done in breeding early ripening peach and nectarine cultivars.
The main research Institutes and private breeders, the objectives of the breeding programs, the new cultivars carrying characters of resistance or low susceptibility to pest, the new cultivars carrying the genetic dwarf characters, saucer shape fruit, blood flesh, are reported.
