Abstract
To improve environmental control in greenhouses, a non-destructive individual plant sensing technique has been studied.
Hereupon, the acoustic emission (AE) for plant development sensing was discussed for water stress detection in culture plant in greenhouse and root growth in soil.

AE signals were taken from a melon plant, which was grown in a passive hydro-culture system.
It has found that the AE sensor could detect the AE signals on the melon stem right below the sensor.
The AE hit counts in daytime was higher than that in night time, and it was realised that the daily hit counts pattern corresponded with the water stress in the plant.

AE signal from the sand movement which was caused by the bulb bud growth could also be detected.
To improve the root growth measurement in not only the sand but also other soils, the physical properties of the soil movements were investigated.
A trial AE sensor which has a main frequency band less than 10kHz was found capable of detection of AE in the six typical plant culture soils with various water contents.
An AE sensor which has a main frequency band less than 15 kHz was used to detect the pumpkin root growth in the soil.
