Abstract
An image analysis system consisting of a monochrome CCD camera equipped with a set of wavelength bandpass filters (453–950 nm) and an illumination chamber was installed, calibrated, and tested.
An analysis of the spectral signature of tomatoes of different degree of maturity confirmed that most information was confined to the wavelength band covered by the 554 nm (green) and 655 nm (red) filters thus providing a simple maturity index.
The weight of tomatoes was found to correlate well (R=0.9852) with the area calculated using image analysis of tomatoes viewed from above.
Furthermore, the shape measures compactness and eccentricity were investigated and found to provide a simple method for evaluating the overall shape of tomatoes.
