Abstract
Polymerase Chain Reaction using universal primers to sequences in the 16S RNA gene and group specific primers to sequences in the ITS region revealed two distinct isolates of phytoplasmas occurring in Rubus plants showing symptoms of rubus stunt.
One Rubus isolate appeared similar to phytoplasmas comprising group 5 (elm yellows); the other isolate appeared to fall into group 3 (X-disease). This is the first identification of phytoplasmas from either of these groups occurring in the UK.
