THE ANTIFUNGAL ACTIVITY OF OLIVE OIL WASTE WATER ON ISOLATES OF VERTICILLIUM DAHLIAE KLEB. IN VITRO

Recent research seems to indicate that, rather than having an adverse affect, the controlled restitution of olive oil waste water (vegetable water) to the soil is actually beneficial.
One of the few doubts concerns the pathogen Verticillium dahliae Kleb., whose widespread diffusion in W. Sicily has given rise to the hypothesis that use of vegetable water may encourage the development of mycelia and the production of microsclerotia and conidia.
In order to test this hypothesis, the following in vitro experiment was carried out.
Vegetable water taken from a continous centrifugation press was added to a PDA medium at doses of 50–100–150–200–300–400 ml/L. Ten isolates of V. dahliae were then added to individual Petri dishes and examined after an incubation period of 30 days.
From the data obtained it has been seen that the use of doses of vegetable water in excess of 300 ml/L tends to inhibit, completely, the development of V. dahliae, although some interesting parameters emerged concerning lower doses and certain isolates.
