A NEW BAG FOR OLIVE POLLINATION STUDIES

It has been checked for olive pollination studies that micropore paper bags are better than those normally used until now, made of either white silky, white glossy or brown matt paper.
Laboratory tests performed under artificially generated high pollen density have shown that the white silky paper allows the olive pollen to pass through it, while neither the double thickness micropore, nor the other two types did this.
This result was checked by microscope observation of the glass plates coated with a thin vaseline layer that had been placed inside each bag type before closing them and starting the laboratory tests.
Moreover, the double thickness micropore bag excludes rain and wind, allows for air exchange, does not raise temperature more than the silky paper one and intercepts only 12% of the photosynthetically active light intensity.
The white silky, white glossy and brown matt paper bags provide 30, 60 and 87% of shading, respectively.
The double bag of micropore paper also allows for good fruit set and fruit development, as shown by field self-compatibility studies during the 1997 spring.
