STUDIES ON THE POTENTIAL USES OF SOME NATIVE PALMS OF THE YUCATAN PENINSULA (MEXICO) AS SUBSTITUTES OF RATTAN

Abstract
The feasibility of obtaining substitute materials from four different palms species, native from Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico is explored.
These are Bactris balanoidea, Bactris mexicana, Desmoncus quasillarius and Acoelorraphe wrightii. The last shows features and properties that compare best with those of rattan.
The comparison was obtained from anatomical studies of sections and dissociated tissues.
Also, a series of mechanical tests were performed to obtain properties under tensile, compressive, and flexural loads.
Resistance to penetration was also measured.
These mechanical tests were performed on samples with no previous chemical treatment.
It is concluded that all four proposed species possess properties that can be compared favourably with those observed for rattan.
Their final utilization should be according to strength requirements for the structure being constructed.
