ROLE OF POLYAMINES IN BERRY SET OF KYOHO GRAPES

Abstract
To elucidate the roles of polyamines in the berry set of grapes, the effects of exogenous application of putrescine and polyamine synthesis inhibitors at full bloom on the berry drop of Kyoho grapes were investigated.
A investigation was also conducted to determine endogenous free polyamine levels during berry development.
Polyamines were dansylated and analysed by reversed phase HPLC with fluorescence spectrophotometry.
Berry drop occurred from 4 days to 18 days after full bloom and reached a peak at 10 days after full bloom.
Although the application of putrescine slightly retarded berry drop, there were no significant differences in the rate of berry set after the cessation of berry drop.
Both alpha-difluoromethylornithine and alpha-difluoromethylarginine, polyamine synthesis inhibitors, accelerated berry drop.
After cessation of berry drop, the rate of berry set was significantly lower in the grapes treated with inhibitors than in the control.
Neither putrescine nor the inhibitors affected seed number per berry.
Putrescine, spermidine and spermine were detected as free polyamines in Kyoho grape berries and their levels, with the exception of that of spermine, decreased during berry drop.
These results indicate that endogenous polyamines have a role in the berry set of grapes.
