Abstract
The annual production of processing tomatoes in Brazil is about 1.3 million tons in an area of nearly 20,000 ha.
Most of the crop is irrigated by center pivots.
There are some experiences with drip irrigation but so far the cropped area with this system is no more than 450 ha.
There is, however, the expectation of increasing the drip irrigated area to 2,500 ha within the next five years.
The main advantages the growers are looking for in this system are: higher yields, lower water, energy, labor and fertilizer usage, better fruit quality and reduction of foliage diseases.
Among the major problems they are facing with drip irrigation are: higher costs, emitter clogging, difficult crop rotation and retrieval of the drip tape.
Part of these problems can be resolved by employing such technologies as efficient water filtration, subsurface drip fertigation and no-tillage cropping.
