Abstract
Histochemical changes in acid phosphatase (ACPase) activity and vacuole localization in the abscission region of processing tomato fruits were investigated.
At the mature stage of fruit development, ACPase activity and vacuole localization were noticeable in the juncture tissue between the ovary and receptacle.
As ripening proceeds, cells between the ovary and receptacle elongate longitudinally, and the fruit eventually separates.
In this stage, ACPase activity decreases rapidly and the vacuoles disappear from the elongated cells.
These results indicate that the changes in ACPase activity and vacuole localization are closely related in the abscission region.
In conclusion, ACPase may contribute to plasma membrane breakdown in the abscission region, especially of the tonoplasts, and induces an autophagous reaction in vacuoles.
