Abstract
Surveys were conducted to determine the incidence of diseases in commercial cranberry beds on eight farms in southwest and northwest Michigan.
In 1999 and 2000, 23 and 33 beds were evaluated, respectively.
Cultivars Pilgrim, Stevens, Ben Lear, Beckwith, Bergman, Searles, WSU 61 and La Munyon were represented.
Random samples of 100 ripe fruit were taken in each bed.
Fruit rot incidence ranged from 5 to 97% (average 33%) and 1 to 91 % (average 26.3%) in 1999 and 2000, respectively.
The predominant fungi isolated from rotted berries were Colletotrichum acutatum, Pestalotia vaccinii, and Phyllosticta vaccinii (early rot). Occasionally, Fusicoccum putrefaciens (end rot), Phomopsis vaccinii (viscid rot), Physalospora vaccinii (blotch rot), Allantophomopsis lycopodina (black rot), Coleophoma empetri (ripe rot), and Botrytis cinerea (yellow rot) were isolated.
Frequency of isolation of these fungi differed somewhat between the two years.
