Abstract
Natural ventilation system alternatives were evaluated using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) numerical model.
Wind speed and direction, side vent opening size and location were studied with respect to airflow patterns and temperature distributions.
Side vent opening size was shown to strongly affect the air temperatures in the greenhouse for a west wind while having little influence on an east wind.
It was predicted that a low side vent at plant height would result in the best temperature and airflow patterns for both wind directions.
For a high side vent located 2.5m above floor and a west wind of 2 5m/s, 59% of the incoming air through the side vent was predicted to move out through the first roof vent opening and result in very high inside air temperatures.
