Abstract
The history of apple breeding at Quebec started in 1970 with the transfer of genetic material from Dr.
Lloyd Spangelo of the Ottawa Research Station to Frelighsburg, a sub-station of the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada station in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec.
Since 1970, numerous cultivars have been released from St-Jean including ‘Blair’ (1973), ‘Richelieu’ (1990), ‘Rouville’ (1991), ‘Primevère’ (1995) and ‘Belmac’ (1995). The long-term objectives of the breeding program are to develop new cold hardy cultivars with tolerance to pest and diseases through partnership programs with private sectors and organization.
Several selections (10280, 79-09, R124A04, R125A44, R130A09, 74-50-13, 77-13-11, A14R3A108, A16R5A15, A23R7A60, A33R5A67, A36R7A87, A38R6A74, FAR006A013, FAR026A042, FAR095A007, O-5410, O-654, O-662) have been evaluated and entered into advanced trials.
Brief descriptions of the methodology and system of evaluation along with a brief description of the most interesting selections will be presented in this paper.
