Abstract
Efforts to promote temperate fruit production in tropical and subtropical environments have been based mainly on the introduction of adapted cultivars and the use of budbreaking chemicals.
Even though this approach has made an important contribution to increase yields, the importance of other sources of germplasm in breeding has been underestimated.
The International Network on Genetic Resources of Temperate Zone Fruits in The Tropics and Subtropics (TZFTS) has proposed a team work among researchers, technicians and the private sector to explore a wider range of genetic resources.
