VEGETABLES PRODUCTION IN GREENHOUSE USING BRACKISH WATER

    Most of the vegetable production in Kuwait is produced in greenhouses due to the harsh climatic conditions of the arid environment.
Brackish water (4000 mg/l) in Kuwait is the main source for agricultural development and available to the farmers with relatively low cost as opposed to desalinized water.
Farmers use mostly desalinized seawater for crop irrigation due to the lack of saline-tolerant crops locally.
Experiments were done to utilize brackish water to grow cabbage, cauliflower, beet and garlic in Kuwait.
Various varieties were selected through two screening procedures to select the most adapted cultivars to Kuwait’s climatic conditions.
Various parameters were measured to compare different treatments such as yield, root growth, soil salinity, plant height and plant vigor.
The most tolerant varieties were recommended to local farmers.
